Fall 2022 trimester classes are held online or in person depending on the course once a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays or Saturdays for a period of 10 weeks. Classes start on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.
Location:
  • Classes will be held either online on Zoom or in person at the Dante Alighieri Cultural Center. For directions go to Dante Alighieri Cultural Center and scroll to the bottom of the page. For online classes, the preferred devices are computers or tablets (not phones). Online students are required to keep their video on at all times in order to fully participate in the class.

  • Online via PayPal.
Tuition:
  • Tuition for online classes is regularly $325, but Dante members are entitled to a $25 discount.

  • Tuition payments can be made online via PayPal. Tuition must be paid in full before the beginning of the first class.

  • Registrations are considered complete only after tuition payment is received in full. Only students with a complete registration will be eligible to attend classes.

  • Late Registration Fee: $25

Refunds:
  • Students who wish to withdraw from a class must notify the instructor no later than the second class meeting. Tuition will be refunded less an administration fee of $50. In the event the course is cancelled, full tuition will be refunded. There are no refunds after the first week of classes. We may grant credit vouchers valid for the following trimester for unforeseen serious medical conditions. Please allow 2-3 weeks for the refund to be processed.
Enrollment Policy:
  • Classes have to have a minimum number of 4 registered students in order to start.
  • Classes size is limited to a maximum number of 14 students.
Makeup Classes:
  • In the unforeseen event of the Dante having to cancel a lesson, the teacher will organize, in agreement with the students, a makeup class. However, should a student miss a lesson offered during its regular time and day of the week, no makeup classes will be offered.

Books
There is no difference between PLIDA classes A, B, C, D, E, P1, P2 and P3. The letters are used to distinguish the same classes offered on Tuesdays (Section A - Online) 7:00-9:00 PM, Wednesdays (Section B - Online) 7:00-9:00 PM, Thursdays (Section C - Online) 7:00-9:00 PM, Tuesdays 4:45-6:45 PM (Section D - Online), Wednesday 5:00-7:00 PM (Section E - Online), Wednesday 4:30-6:30 PM (Section P1 - In Person), Wednesday 7:00-9:00 PM (Section P2 - In Person) and Saturday 10:00 AM-12:00 PM (Section P3 - In Person). The textbooks adopted for the PLIDA classes have been specifically designed for use in the international PLIDA courses. The titles are:
  • Nuovo Espresso 1 - A1 (by Luciana Ziglio and Giovanna Rizzo, Alma Edizioni, Firenze) for the 101, 102 and 103 course + CD or DVD.
  • Nuovo Espresso 2 - A2 (by Maria Balì and Giovanna Rizzo, Alma Edizioni, Firenze) for the 104, 105 and 106 courses + CD or DVD.
  • Nuovo Espresso 3 - B1 (by Maria Balì and Luciana Ziglio, ALMA Edizioni, Firenze) for the 107, 108 and 109 courses + CD or DVD.
  • Nuovo Espresso 4 - B2 (by Maria Balì and Irene Dei, ALMA Edizioni, Firenze) for the 110, 111 and 112 courses + CD or DVD.
  • Nuovo Espresso 5 - C1 (by Giorgio Massei and Rosella Bellagamba, ALMA Edizioni, Firenze) for the 115, 116 and 117 courses + CD or DVD.
  • Nuovo Espresso 6 - C2 (by Michela Guida and Chiara Pegoraro, ALMA Edizioni, Firenze) for the 118, 119 and 120 courses + CD or DVD.
  • Nuovissimo Progetto italiano 2 - B1-B2 (by Telis Marin, EDILINGUA, Roma) for the 113 and 114 courses obtainable only at EDILINGUA (Nuovissimo Progetto italiano 2 - Libro dello studente + DVD Video).
  • Espresso Ragazzi 3 - B1 (by Maria Balí, Luciana Ziglio, Euridice Orlandino - ALMA Edizioni, Firenze) for the 201 course (PLIDA Juniores) + CD or DVD.
Students who need a book, will have to purchase it before the beginning of the course. Books can be purchased online at I AM BOOKS or AMAZON. Books are also available in digital format (ebook in PDF format) at ALMA EDIZIONI. All the students who will attend the courses 101, 104, 107, 110, 113, 115 and 118 need a book. Subsequent printed class material that may be required will be distributed to all students for all classes on a needed basis.

Returning students whose class falls within the 2nd and 3rd class (102, 103, 105, 106, 108, 109, 111, 112, 114, 116, 117, 119 and 120) of a tri-class PLIDA section as mentioned above will continue to use the current book they have on hand to complete the section.

New students, with prior study and knowledge of the Italian language and who have been evaluated by the School Director or the School Coordinator or have taken a placement test and are subsequently placed in a class within a 2nd or 3rd class of a tri-class PLIDA section, will HAVE TO PURCHASE the book.

They will also learn how to deal with situations while travelling in Italy.

This course concludes level B1 (Intermediate) of language proficiency and focuses on helping students prepare for the PLIDA – B1 level exam. The course 109 aims to bring students to a level of knowledge of Italian that will allow them to understand the main points of conversations about work, school and leisure but also common situations while travelling in Italy.

This advance intermediate course starts level B2 of language proficiency and focuses on refining language skills by introducing four major thematic areas: society, history, geography and art, each of which will be explored in depth commensurate with the course level. The further mastery of linguistic skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) is thus enriched by learning about and discussing cultural elements which will enhance the student's understanding of essential aspects of contemporary Italy.

This course completes level B2 of language proficiency by focusing on more extensive practice in all four skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. As in both PLIDA 110 and PLIDA 111, linguistic acquisition is expanded and strengthened by more in-depth learning and discussion of cultural topics – related to society, history, geography, and art – which will enhance the student’s understanding of essential aspects of contemporary Italy. This course also helps prepare those students who are interested in taking the B2 Certification exam.

This course starts level C1 of language proficiency and is designed to fortify and elevate linguistic skills through a learning process commensurate to the higher course level. Students are thus exposed to a more articulated exploration of thematic areas – society, history, geography and art – previously introduced in level B2 courses, and will consequently acquire a more sophisticated understanding of Italy's complex realities. Resources: selected cultural and literary readings, films and videos.
